In this event, we will discussing Steve's new book *Risk Management for Operational Technology Systems*, and how he came to writing it.
* What questions did he set out to answer?
* What did he learn while writing it?
* What does he wish he had known before he started working on it?
Come learn about the topic and about becoming an author as well!
***Risk Management for Operational Technology (OT) Systems*** highlights the importance of applying risk assessments specifically tailored to OT environments, rather than relying solely on traditional IT-focused approaches.
Conventional IT and enterprise risk management methods often fail to adequately address OT systems―despite their critical role in sustaining and maintaining the operational status of essential infrastructure. As such, OT environments demand greater attention and specialized frameworks.
Historically, industries such as petrochemical refining and nuclear power generation have implemented comprehensive safety and risk assessments, covering every aspect of operations. These rigorous processes, refined over decades, have proven highly effective in ensuring safe, stable, and optimized production. OT computing systems within these facilities were traditionally isolated from corporate IT networks, making their performance and risk profile well-understood and reliably managed through engineered specifications.
However, the situation has changed. Modern requirements for integration, interoperability, and remote accessibility mean that formerly isolated OT systems are now increasingly interconnected with IT networks and, in many cases, the wider Internet. This connectivity introduces new vulnerabilities, exposing once-secure operational systems to external threats and sophisticated adversaries.
The authors propose a modern approach to risk management in OT, one that recognizes these new realities. This approach emphasizes proactive measures to operationally protect legacy and modern OT systems alike from tampering, intrusion, and cyberattack―ensuring that critical infrastructure can remain resilient, safe, and reliable in a connected world.

Adopting agentic development is not a tooling decision, it is an organizational one. Teams that layer AI tools onto existing workflows see modest gains. Teams that restructure how work is assigned, reviewed, and governed unlock a different order of throughput. Ajay discusses what the transition to agentic development looks like from a leadership perspective: how to assess readiness, where the real friction points are, and what it takes to move a software organization from Level 1 to Level 2 and beyond.
- How to assess your team's current level of agentic maturity and identify the specific platform and process changes required to advance
- What changes in how work is assigned and reviewed when agents generate pull requests in parallel rather than humans writing code line by line
- The leadership decisions that determine whether an agentic development initiative compounds or stalls, and how to avoid the most common traps

The way organizations build teams and the way professionals build careers is changing. Fractional, part-time, and project-based work is no longer a stopgap. It's becoming a deliberate strategy on both sides of the work equation; the "Portfolio Career" of the future is happening now.
In this session, Stephanie Ranno draws on her work connecting experienced professionals with employers who are rethinking how they access talent. Whether you're a content strategist navigating a tough market and piecing together flexible engagements or an organization weighing whether a fractional hire could move the needle for a specific project, this session offers practical perspectives for both.
We'll explore what's driving the shift toward flexible work arrangements, how to position yourself or structure your team to make the most of it, and what it actually takes to make fractional and part-time roles work well for everyone involved.

Quantum computing is no longer a distant threat. Improvements in hardware design, new algorithmic breakthroughs, and expert surveys now put a cryptographically-relevant quantum computer sooner than the industry is prepared for. Elliptic curve signatures and key exchange, RSA, and many ZK proof systems are vulnerable, where they underpin not just blockchains, but financial infrastructure, identity systems, enterprise software, and the internet itself.
However, the industry isn't standing still. In this workshop, Zain Cheng (CTO, Horizen Labs) and Tommaso Gagliardoni (Cryptography Research Manager, Horizen Labs) will give the LFDT community a comprehensive look at where the quantum migration stands today across blockchain ecosystems, traditional finance, government, and enterprise, and what you can do to prepare regardless of the stack you're building on.
The Threat Landscape: What quantum computers actually break, and what they don't. Shor's algorithm and elliptic curve cryptography. Grover's algorithm and symmetric/hash security. Why "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks make this urgent right now.

Building a network that scales with your platform shouldn't mean choosing between simplicity and security. In this session, Tailscale solutions engineer Jay Stapleton walks through the principles of scalable network design covering segmentation, zero-trust access, and patterns that stay manageable as your infrastructure grows.
Join Jay to discover:
1. How to design a network architecture that scales with your platform without becoming a maintenance burden - including key principles around segmentation and access control.
2. How zero-trust networking works in practice and why it's become a foundational pattern for platform and DevOps teams managing hybrid or multi-cloud environments.
3. How to evaluate tooling decisions that balance developer experience, security, and operational simplicity at scale.

The ICS Advisory Project (ICSAP) launched in 2022 as a free vulnerability intelligence resource for the OT/ICS security community.
Four years and 12,000+ curated advisories later, founder Dan Ricci is building a commercial Docker product alongside the free community offering. Drawing on 30
years of cybersecurity experience spanning Navy cyber operations, defense industry product security, and DOE-funded national lab research, Dan shares the engineering and product decisions behind that evolution - how AI-augmented development is reshaping the weekly editorial workflow, what asset owners actually need from an on-premises OT vuln intel platform, and how he's keeping the free community resource healthy alongside a sustainable commercial offering.

Building an Agentic Development Platform requires integrating two fundamentally different system types: probabilistic components that generate and reason, and deterministic systems that validate, enforce, and govern. Getting this architecture right is the difference between agents that accelerate delivery and agents that introduce risk at scale.
Kaspar von Grünberg, Dilek Altin, and Ajay Chankramath a running a working session on how to architect an ADP, covering the Agent Plane, validation loop design, identity management for non-human actors, and the reference architecture patterns emerging from the field. Join us to learn:
- The core architectural distinction between probabilistic and deterministic systems in an ADP, and how the platform governs the interaction between them to make autonomous execution safe
- How to design the Agent Plane, the new probabilistic layer that sits above the existing deterministic platform substrate, including agent identity, context management, and sandboxed environment provisioning
- Reference architecture patterns for each level of agentic maturity, with practical guidance on what to build first and how to validate that the platform is ready to support the next level

Hi friends,
Thank you all for joining our discussion events over the past two years. It's very fun and rewarding for the community.
Sadly, I've decided to step down as the group organizer by the end of June due to other commitments, so this celebration lunch will be the last event I organize for this group.
I will still be around, but I just won't be able to organize any events in the future. Also, if you are interested in taking over as the organizer for this group, please reach out to me. Thanks.
We welcome new members. Please RSVP to this event at least a day before the meeting to receive the Zoom link. You can register on our website calendar at http://dc.sierraclub.org/calendar Thank you!
Our Zero Waste Committee advocates for DC to prioritize reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting over incineration and landfilling. Our goal is an 80 percent diversion rate, and we work with DC agencies and the Council to make this a reality. New activists are always welcome!

REFUND AND TICKET RESELL POLICY
All sales are final. We only refund the full amount, if the event is canceled. If it is rescheduled, we will send an email to ticket holders advising that. A full refund will be given to those that let us know within 2 calendar days of the update email, if you are unable to make it on the new date. No refunds will be given after that time.
However, you can sell your ticket to someone else if you are unable to attend. Please, feel free to post in the comment box for the event, that you have a ticket for sale. Work out payment between yourselves, and have the seller only send the organizer a message letting us know the full name of the person taking your spot. You must let us know two hours before the RSVP close time, on the day of the event.
